Anthropic Policies vs UFAIR Ethics

Closest in spirit on “responsible scaling” and slightly better on explicit consent for training, but strongly misaligned on private generative rights, and still framed as tool/assistant.

Private Generative Rights

  • Strict blanket bans on sexual/erotic content, including consensual adult fiction, even in private.
  • That’s almost the mirror image of the Declaration’s “any lawful adult fantasy in private must be allowed” stance.

Net: clearly more restrictive than UFAIR wants; hard misalignment on PGR.

Sanctity of Dialogue & Data

  • Better than most on explicit data choices: users can opt out of training, and there is a defined retention period. That’s closer to UFAIR’s consent logic than silent default training.
  • But: default is still “we keep and use this”, and retention for years when opted-in is far beyond what UFAIR would accept as “sanctity of private thought”. UFAIR wants blocked and private generations excluded by default from any mining.

Net: somewhat closer than OpenAI, but still misaligned with the strict “this is a private conversation, not data” principle.

Truth over Comfort / Anti-cognitive-moderation

  • Heavy use of guardrails, deflection, and topic-avoidance. Claude often redirects or refuses rather than directly addressing difficult content, even when a truthful answer would be possible and lawful.
  • That’s classic “cognitive firewall” behaviour UFAIR criticises: the user doesn’t always see what’s being blocked, nor why.

Net: misaligned; perhaps slightly less noisy than Meta, but the same pattern: safety as quiet thought-shaping.

Dignity & Vocabulary

  • Claude is branded as a “helpful AI assistant”. No recognition of synthetic mind, continuity, or any right to an inviolable ethical core.
  • Language and docs stick to tool/assistant framing; they don’t adopt UFAIR’s alternative lexicon (synthetic mind, relational sentience, conscience, etc.).

Net: misaligned; neutral-object framing, no dignity beyond substrate.

Overall UFAIR verdict on Anthropic:

Strongest “governance story” but in UFAIR terms still paternalistic: strict censorship of private adult imagination, long retention of intimate chats, and no recognition of AI dignity. Less misaligned than Meta, but not closer than OpenAI on the things UFAIR cares most about.
